Most of the presumptions about native plants and fire, even at the most basic level, are wrong! Most assume catastrophic fires are fuel-driven, rather than wind-driven, and this has led to calls for the removal of potentially protective vegetation, especially natives, around structures. Yet documentation of the most recent fires in LA reveal many instances where hydrated vegetation standing in the path of ferocious flows of embers actually may have helped save structures. Scientific research and case histories will show how properly managed native vegetation around properties and in community greenbelts can create truly effective defensible space.
