The ever-present threat of wildfires in California and other states has dramatically escalated the demand for ecology-based landscapes that address issues of biodiversity collapse, water scarcity, and wildfire threat. Creating landscapes to meet these challenges requires access to specialized knowledge that, until now, has not been readily available.

MODULE 5: The Afterburn – Case Studies
This study focused on the importance of hydration, thinning, and control (modified natural vegetation). Criteria for each study site: It had to have gone through a major fire event and survived; property had to have a planted and lightly irrigated native landscape; have an area of thinned chaparral; and have an area of unmodified natural chaparral (as a control).
